When Apple first released the iOS 18.1 Developer Beta for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max with the Apple Intelligence Beta, users had to make sure that Siri’s language was set to U.S. English. The region of the device had to be set on U.S. Changing the latter could impact how phone numbers look on iPhone models used outside the states and could also affect the calendar app.
But yesterday, when Apple released iOS 18.1 Developer Beta 3, the tech giant did make a change, dropping the requirements for an iPhone’s region to be set to the U.S. Some of the rules still apply. Siri’s language must still be set on U.S. English, and the only devices that Apple Intelligence will work with are the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPads and Macs powered by the M1 or higher.
Even though it is easier now for those outside the U.S. to test Apple Intelligence, it needs to be pointed out that AI-backed features like Writing Tools will still only work with email and messages written in English. Summaries of emails and websites also will only work with English text. Perhaps the only AI feature that doesn’t require the English language is the Clean Up feature released on Wednesday when Apple made iOS 18.1 Developer Beta 3 available.

Very similar to the Magic Eraser feature that was a big deal when Google introduced it with the Pixel 6 line in 2021, Clean Up allows those with a compatible iPhone to remove distracting items from pictures selected from the Photos app by circling the item, or rubbing over it with a finger.
Apple also added notification summaries with the new iOS 18.1 Developer Beta. Users will be prompted whether they want to see summaries for notifications sent from their apps. Compatible iPhone models received a page with an example that gave an example about how this feature works. The notification summary preview used for this example was based on one of Apple’s most famous commercials, “The Crazy Ones.”
If you are running Apple Intelligence on an iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max and you enabled or disabled the notification summary previews with the initial prompt, you can change your mind by going to Settings > Notifications > Summarize Previews. From the Summarize Preview screen, you can decide which apps you’ll receive notification summaries from and which ones you don’t want to receive them from.
Since the stable version of iOS 18.1 won’t be pushed out until October, you can expect more Beta versions to appear over the next few weeks which should lead to more Apple Intelligence features that can be previewed by iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max users with the latest release of the iOS 18.1 Beta operating system installed.
